How to Quiet Your Heed So Y'all Tin Hear From God

"If destruction fails to entangle us, distraction will practise information technology'due south best." – Beth Moore

As I sit here at my desk preparing to write, to share something that I hope ministers to you, dear readers, I discover myself needing to do offset, the very thing I desire to share with yous today.  I need to stop and heed. I need to placidity my mind and heed for God to speak.

How do I exercise that?

Information technology's a discipline that I'1000 still working on (and probably e'er volition be). My mind is not, naturally, a placidity place.  Yours probably isn't either.  Am I right?

Distractions are everywhere, but there are steps we tin have to minimize those distractions and tranquility our thoughts, even in the midst of our busy lives.  We demand quiet pauses in our day.  We need to brand space for listening to the most of import vox of all- the vocalization of God.

Last week, here on the blog, I wrote about some ideas for becoming a better listener in our conversations with others.  You tin can read that post, Hither. This week, I want to continue on the topic of listening.

When we listen for God, we might consider the following verse,

"And then a great and powerful current of air tore the mountains autonomously and shattered the rocks before the Lord, just the Lord was not in the wind. Afterwards the wind in that location was an earthquake, merely the Lord was not in the earthquake. Afterward the convulsion came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And subsequently the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face up and went out and stood at the oral cavity of the cavern." i Kings 19:11-13 (NIV)

Observe that God's voice came to Elijah every bit a gentle whisper.  We have to be quiet to hear a whisper.

I call back, too, of how Jesus went away to "lonely places and prayed" (Luke 5:16).

My own experiences in hearing God speak to me seem to come during the placidity times also.

Practise I hear an audible vocalisation?  I haven't, personally (only that doesn't hateful it doesn't happen).  It would be interesting to search for all the instances where God speaks to people in an aural voice throughout the Bible.  In that location are plenty of examples to be found.

For me, I hear God when I'thou reading the Bible.  The meaning of a certain poesy, possibly something I've read many times earlier, will suddenly go more than articulate, often speaking to an surface area of my life that I accept questions nigh.

There are other times when I read the Bible; I might not feel like I received a whole lot from that time.  Merely afterward, sometimes much afterward, when I need it, a poetry will come back to me- and information technology's like a light bulb comes on.  A fresh perspective, a thought that I know wasn't from me…these are some of the ways I hear God speaking to me.

God speaks to us through the Bible and it's the Holy Spirit that illuminates His Word, speaking to us and so that we can meliorate understand it and how it relates to our lives.

If we're wondering whether the voice we're hearing is the voice of God, there's an easy test.  God won't contradict himself.  Nosotros can measure everything against his Word in the Bible.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness," two Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

Nosotros tin can, and should, test everything we hear against the Scriptures.

"At present these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the discussion with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to come across if these things were and then." Acts 17:11 (ESV)

I believe that God speaks to united states of america but nosotros miss out on what he's saying because nosotros're non listening.

How can we quiet our minds and minimize the distractions that get in the way of hearing from God?

Here are 6 tips for quieting your listen so you can listen to God:

1. Identify yourself in an environs that helps you concentrate.  Notice a repose corner or room that is abroad from distractions.  I live in small house with my husband and 2 teens, so sometimes, the but place I can find is the bathroom!  I like to make full the bathtub with hot water, lock the door, and read my Bible while I soak.

ii. Talk to God about what you're reading in the Bible when you pray.  Care for it like a conversation.  Exit space and quiet for him to respond.

3. Don't fight distracting thoughts by trying to avert them altogether.  The more you focus on what you don't want to call back about, the more than you'll think about it!  Instead, call back of those distracting thoughts as if y'all're sitting by the side of a busy state highway.  The thoughts are like cars speeding by.  Admit that they're there, watch them get past, and let go.

four. Choose a brusque phrase or sentence from the Bible.  Meditate on information technology, reading and re-reading information technology until it really sinks in.

5. Find a fourth dimension to pray and meditate that works for you and stay consistent with that fourth dimension. First thing in the morning works for a lot of people.

6. Start modest. Babe steps.  If you aren't used to sitting quietly, endeavor 5 minutes until that gets easier, so piece of work your mode upwardly to longer periods.

The habit of listening is something that you tin can improve upon and develop.  It doesn't e'er come easily.  With a piffling practise and intention, you tin strengthen your power to quiet your listen and meditate.

Heed for God's voice.  He's has something to say to you.
